OER reading group summary by Rachel Hamelers
Throughout our OER reading group, I have explored the idea of how instructors in different disciplines could consistently incorporate critically thinking about information in their teaching, including but not limited to issues such as access (open and otherwise), authority, and power structures. In pursuit of this goal, I led a session at the Information Literacy Roundtable (at Muhlenberg) in January asking faculty to think about the information of their discipline and how the power structures around information impacted the content they taught. This led to a conversation on structures on power, how to think about them in one’s own discipline, and how to integrate it into one’s teaching. I was recently accepted to facilitate a similar workshop at the LVAIC Information Literacy Symposium in May. Encouraging students to critically examine information throughout their education, so that we help develop the next generation of informed scholars, starts with our own awareness. I hope to continue to explore these ideas after this reading group concludes.
