Openness as a Situated Learning Space

Several of the readings for our meeting this week have me thinking about how to make my classes more open.  Specifically, Adam Croom’s piece, sent in a link by Tim, suggests “open as a situated learning space,” which is a deeper concept that OER or open pedagogy.  But how do we create this learning space in light of DeRosa’s concerns of “digital redlining,” as this is a concern for our classrooms and larger society?  Rich’s point about allowing laptops in class is something that I struggle with as well.  What does a successful open learning space look like; one that takes into consideration the realities of digital redlining and students who don’t participate in class b/c they are distracted by their access to social media and internet?
