Thoughts on evolving standards of tenure and promotion reviews and open sharing of scholarly work

The quickening pace of the use of digital media both inside and outside academia is forcing our institutions to forgo reliance solely on traditional assessment standards. I do not believe that we are in a position to deny or delay, any longer, the consideration of these contributions to our scholarly work. The longer we delay, the less we will contribute to these new fields of inquiry as these efforts are not regarded as legitimate to our professional development. While we have suggested guidelines from MLA and the Richardson piece, I’m left wondering what an appropriate assessment of various types of digital projects would look like.

Regarding the multitude of sites to share scholarly work on the web, the most advantageous site would be a non-profit as described by Jeff and Cliff in their blogs. This is the only way to ensure inclusivity of output for the greater good. Although, as Chip points out, are there scenarios where a more closed system is desireable?
